For over a decade, Razer. has been offering gamers high-quality performance hardware and a series of software to support their products.
With e-Sports evolving and growing, the company started offering more and more competition-ready peripherals. Not only do they offer products for everyday use, but they provide gamers with that competitive edge as well. Their latest release, the Razer BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma, meets the Razer caliber, but does it level with professional grade keyboards?
Upon reception, Razer offers this BlackWidow keyboard with a handy black bag that has enough space to fit the product, as well as a couple of other flat objects such as a notepad, USB keys, spare cables, keyboard cleaning products, and more. For everyday players, it can be used for different purposes. However, for gamers that are active in the professional scene, it is excellent; it keeps the BlackWidow clean and easily transportable.
Now the first thing that is noticeable when plugging it in the PC, is that it has the Chroma technology built-in, meaning that it can light up with over 16.8 million colors to choose from. Not only does this permit the user to personalize their hardware to emit the color they desire, but it also entails that there are limitless customization possibilities. Additionally, there are 7 settings to choose from: Spectrum Cycling, Breathing, Static, Custom, Reactive, Templates and Wave.
Although they are set effects, with Razer Synapse, users can customize various elements such as the color, speed of color change, light intensity and more. The best part about using Synapse with the Chroma technology is that you can save a few settings and switch in between them in a flash. Additionally, the keyboard will recognize what game you are playing and switch settings for you. All you will have to do is set your preferences on a few settings and your all set!
If you are the type to inspect the product and analyze its components, you will notice that it has many features, just like other Razer BlackWidow keyboards. Unfortunately, just like the regular Tournament Edition, the Chroma version doesn’t have braided fiber cable, macro keys, audio-in and microphone-out jacks, and a USB pass-through. Since it only requires a regular and single USB connection to power it, it isn’t enough to support more than the necessary set of keys; the number pad was also removed in order to make the product slick, compact and tournament-ready.
Once you’ve set it all up, which can honestly take no more than a minute, you should be ready to start typing. If you are new to mechanical keyboards, you might have to get a little used to the sensibility. On the other hand, if you are quite familiar with them, especially keys used on prior Razer models, you will notice that not only are your fingers lying on a comfortable product, but the sound emitted by the mechanical switches aren’t as aggressive either. Although it is impossible to test it thoroughly, Razer guarantees that their switches are durable and made to last up to 60 million keystrokes. With an actuation forces of 50g, your fingers barely have to do any work at all.
Although it all sounds like the best product on paper, it fails to deliver the same feedback as a few high end keyboards. Set aside this little detail that only a few out there will notice, the BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma is an excellent piece of technology that sets itself apart. It has the necessary features for professional players; it can even cater to casual gamers. Unfortunately, when it comes to everyday use, this new toy isn’t as versatile as others. Then again, this one was designed for competition, and does what it is supposed to do in a very professional and elegant way.
Slick, solid and competitive-ready, The BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma reflects the ideals of its maker, Razer. With every aspect of it build for comfort and performance, it has been designed with features that are useful to every type of gamer out there. Whether you play MOBAs, first-person shooters, or even RPGs, this elegant keyboard will help you rev your game up notch. Built for gamers, by gamers, this cool new toy is just aching to follow you around.
When it comes to gaming, it is important for me to be around hardware that can help me perform, and last long. This BlackWidow keyboard offers exactly what I need when it comes to gaming. Although I am not yet ready for competition – I play League of Legends – I have notice a huge difference in skills ever since I started using mechanical switches. This Chroma, compared to my BlackWidow Ultimate, is lot more comfortable to use. Additionally, it does a great job not bothering my friends when we play online, since it does significantly less noise. I did dislike the fact that is it considerably shorter than my Ultimate model, but that’s a personal opinion – the fact that I have very large hands make it easier for me to have a larger keyboard frame. In the end, the BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma easily sets itself in my top 10 best gaming keyboards list.
