E3 2017 Preview: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Disposes All Available Ressources For Your Team’s Sake

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is the latest action-packed shooter for the Star Wars franchise. After a couple of years waiting for a new title to rise, Battlefront 2 already looks a lot more promising than the previous game. I can’t say whether or not reviews will be scattered between good and bad, but I know for sure that this preview praises the demo that was available at E3 2017. How so? Allow me to explain!

Star Wars Battlefront 2 was demonstrated in a trailer for the first time some time ago, and from the get-go, it looked amazing. Online, fans have been claiming it to look exactly like the movie series, which is a great deal for the developers. This meant that the realism of the game’s design would reflect the universe of Star Wars in a way no other Star Wars title has ever achieved. Naturally, I had to give it a go for myself to see if indeed it would up to its word.

The demo that was available on the E3 show floor wasn’t anything light; it featured a 20 versus 20 mode whereas the team of Battle Droids had to engage against Stormtroopers. The mission – I was a Droid – was to progressively eliminate the enemy in order to advance with the tank drone. Ultimately, the drone would blow up and entry point into the citadel, where we had to gain control of it. On the other side of the map, the Stormtrooper team had to use everything in their possession to prevent us from achieving our goal. The demo took quite some time, but at a certain point, losing a Droid meant drawing out our resources. My team and I failed to complete the mission. However, the challenges we have faced were interesting enough for me to give the game a second run.

The multiplayer demo was interesting and as I mentioned above, challenging. The map is quite big enough for 40 players, leaving us many tactical options. Do I follow my team and engage head on, where most of the action takes place, and protect the tank, or should I flank from the sides and snipe as many enemies as I can? I decided to go for a sneakier approach and early on, that gave my team an advantage – I think it could also be caused by the fact that the players still weren’t used to the controls!

Visually, the game is stunning. Everything from texture detail to special effects, such as explosions and laser shots look like it just came out of a Star Wars movie. That element, in coordination with the backdrop music and FX sounds, creates a realistic environment in which you feel as though every shot you take makes a difference. You don’t feel the impact as much as you should, but then again, you are trained for this kind of war. As a Droid, I shouldn’t complain too much.

Things get a lot more interesting as you gain points. In a war, minions aren’t the only ones in the front. As points grow in numbers, upon death, you can spend them in order to spawn as a different unit. For example, for my side, as a Battle Droid, I would have been able to spawn as a stronger and more tanky Droid (my weapon would deal a lot more damage), a ground-based vehicle with mounted laser guns, or even a hero. Heroes, and Villains include Rey, Han Solo, Darth Maul, and Boba Fett. However, the final product will feature a selection far more extensive as this one. Each Hero/Villain has a special move set that contributes to the team. For example, Boba Fett can fly in the sky and tag enemies, thus revealing their position for the rest of your allies to see.

Overall, the multiplayer experience was delightful. Since there are so many players, it wasn’t necessary to communicate with one another. However, doing so would have granted us a lot more coordination, which could have turned the tables in our favor.

The final product will have a lot to offer, like more heroes and villains, more maps and modes, and a campaign mode. How will the rest fair compare to the amazing demo that was showcased at E3 2017 have yet to be determined? From what I have seen so far, I am pretty confident that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be a shooter worth getting acquainted with, especially if you are a fan of the franchise.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be available on November 17, 2017, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
