Hololens Dev Kit Unveiled

Last week, Microsoft held a conference where they’ve discussed about Hololens and its upcoming Development Edition that is coming out.

As of yesterday, pre-ordering the Development Edition of the Hololens has become a possibility. However, when it comes down to pricing, the tag isn’t cheap. As a matter of a fact, the price goes all the way to $3,000 USD. Of course, for that amount, you get the device’s dev kit, but it also comes jacked with tons of documentation and instructional videos planned to help developers with the creation of games and applications.

Interestingly enough, the Hololens Development Edition comes with three games:

Fragments – You take on the role of investigator as you analyse evidence of the crime scene create in the area surrounding you. Your goal is to put the clues together and find the culprit.

“Fragments blends the line between the digital world and the real world more than any other experience we built. When your living room has been used as the set for a story, it generates memories for you of what digitally happened in your space like it was real. It is an experience that bridges the uncanny valley of your mind and delivers a new form of storytelling like never before,” affirmed Microsoft corporate vice president Kudo Tsunoda on the game’s official description.

Young Conker – Transform your surroundings into a unique level for the rude Conker to explore.

“It is amazing how different the play experience feels based on playing the game in your living room versus your kitchen or your bedroom. Even starting the game from a different position in a single room creates an entirely new gameplay dynamic,” describes Tsunoda.

RoboRaid – A first person shooter where you must take down enemies that jump at you through walls and such. The audio has a very important role in this game as it unveils the direction in which enemies will come from.

In addition to the three aforementioned games, non-gaming applications are also available, such as a special version of Skype where you interact with your friends and contacts as holograms, a 3D image creator called HoloStudio, and 360 degree tour experience of locations such as Rome.

Hololens is looking to be quite a unique product and although it doesn’t offer the same as what virtual reality devices offer, it’s doing its own thing. I am curious to know if it runs using Google’s Project Tango!
