Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Trailer Reveal

The End of the Beginning

Developed by Eidos Montreal, Shadow of the Tomb Raider got a new trailer released today. Following in its predecessors’ footsteps, this adventure promises to be dark, thrilling and to explore the Mayan civilization folklore.

As the third entry in the series, we have grown to expect certain elements form a Tomb Raider game (the reboot, that is). The first one explored a Japanese island cursed by the Sun Queen Himiko. Any plane would disappear in the Dragon’s Triangle, much like the Bermuda Triangle. The second, Rise of the Tomb Raider, had Lara searching for the legendary city of Kitezh in Siberia, knee-deep in snow and in communist military bases. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the whole world is threated by the Mayan apocalypse, as shown by the ominous eclipse drawing near in the trailer.

Set in Mexico this time, we immediately feel a darker and more foreboding tone than the previous titles. We just hope that the story won’t suffer from fatigue, rehashing the same formula again and again. The Uncharted series suffered a little from this, with all the stories exposing a mythical city’s true nature as scientific rather than magical.

As for the puzzles, the Tomb Raider games are known for their secret tombs, offering just enough of a challenge to exercise our grey cells. The Mayan culture is shrouded with mystery and the ancient pyramids provide a very interesting setting. The climbing, combat and weapon customization mechanics have also been a big part of the gameplay. We hope that new and exciting tools will be added to Lara’s arsenal. Since the story takes heavily after the Mayan folklore, it would be great to use blowguns and spears. At any rate, it is exciting to see this franchise alive and well; after all, Lara Croft is such an emblematic figure in gaming since her debut in 1996. We cannot wait to see where her adventures take her next!

Shadow of the Tomb Raider comes out on September 14, 2018 and will be available on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC.
