Earthworm Jim is up for Grabs

Today, video game company Interplay announced that they plan on selling their library of IP rights.

As a whole, Interplay currently owns quite a number of titles and IPs, such as Earthworm Jim, Freespace, Giants, Kingpin, Messiah, MDK, Run Like Hell, Sacrifice, Battle Chess, Clayfighter, Dark Alliance, Descent, T-Rex Rumble, and more. From the sound of it, Interplay plans on selling the IPs so that developers can bring them back to life using the new gaming media.

With the proliferation of mobile, augmented reality, virtual reality and other new forms of consumption, we believe that consumers are ready to experience and interact with Interplay’s characters, stories and game play in ways never possible before,” stated President of Interplay Eric Caen. “We look forward to seeing how this unique portfolio of interactive entertainment icons will evolve for the worldwide audience.

Indeed, it is a great time for the company to sell its IP. However, I still believe that they should keep a couple of the IPs, just in case their market value increases any further.

At the time being, there are no details discussion official prices or the value of the IPs in question. However, from what we have seen online, not everyone is interested in some of the series. For example, last year, a new Freespace Tactics was being funded via Kickstarter. The company posted that a $75,000 target was required – a small amount when you think about it. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter failed; the company was nowhere near the target.

Of course, this lead to some thinking, which probably backed their decision to sale everything they have in their library.
