PlayStation 5 Expected For 2018 Release?
It seems we may see the next step in gaming sooner than we thought. After the release of the Nintendo Switch and the approaching Project Scorpio, Sony may be readying the PlayStation 5.
Damian Thong, an analyst with Macquarie Research, has provided some insight through his report regarding Sony’s next step in the entertainment industry. It seems that Sony may be targeting a late 2018 release for the PlayStation 5 and that’s all that is known about this machine. According to Damian, the PlayStation 5 is a machine that is setting up to become the strongest product in the market showing off a 10 teraflop GPU.
“We see sustained profit growth in Game & Network Services. We forecast OP growth from ¥140bn in FY3/17 to ¥180bn in FY3/18, driven by expanding software sales and profits,” said Thong. “A rising digital ratio and a higher mix of first-party titles will help margins – Horizon Zero Dawn, which launched on 28 Feb, looks to have had a good start with a Metacritic score of 88. While we have tempered expectations to account for rivalry with Microsoft/Xbox and PC gaming, we note that the success of PS VR (which has reached 915K units sold) highlights the health of the ecosystem. We expect Sony to launch a >10 TFLOPS ‘PS5’ in 2H18 to secure the installed base.” – Damian Thong
The question to be asked here is why a 2018 release? With both the PS VR, PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim having only hit stores but a few months ago, wouldn’t a brand new console simply shut down these products? The PS VR could be transcended towards the PS5 by making it compatible. No doubt, a “PS VR Pro” could be prepared to take advantage of the new machine’s power. However, it still prove to be relatively early for Sony to release a successor. Of course, this move is only to ensure they stay in the competitive race alongside Nintendo and Microsoft’s machine platforms.
What do you think? Should Sony release the PS5 in late 2018? Should they wait until the PS4 has exhausted all it can in the market? How will the PS4 fare when the Scorpio enters the market? Let us know in the comments below.
