GDC 2016: Unreal Engine Allows For VR Development in… VR?

Epic Games is on stage talking about all things Unreal. Of course, there is a lot of ground to cover and hopefully, we will hear about some cool things.

Watch the conference right here straight from Epic Games’ Twitch channel. There are many topics in mind including news about the Unreal Engine, new games like their big MOBA: Paragon or even the Bullet Train VR demo. Check it out right here:

Epic Games got big things for VR. It seems that with the Unreal Engine, developers will be able to create new VR experiences while being in VR itself. Starting today, this new feature for the Unreal Engine is now available and source code can be obtained from GitHub. Binary code will arrive in June however.

This new element is as simple as it actually sounds. While in VR, developers can truly feel the freedom needed to control, create and mold the virtual reality experience they wish to make. Imagine yourself being to freely move about the world around with no need to respect the laws of physics. You can edit menus, edit environments and easily change your view angle in any way.

“This is really just the beginning, and we want to take you along for the ride,” Fricker said.

Of course, this is actually not the first time the VR editing was shown off. In February, a presentation was shown exhibiting the very idea of what it means to edit in virtual reality. In case you did not watch it, the presentation video is posted down below.

“You’re editing VR in VR,” Sweeney said at the time. “It’s a completely what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience. There’s no question about what your game looks like.”

“To see all of Unreal Editor in VR … it’s something I never thought possible when we started,” Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe said.
