Ubisoft Expands To Saguenay

Video Game developer and publisher Ubisoft announced today their biggest expansion plan in the Quebec province in the past 20 years.

This morning, in Chicoutimi, Ubisoft co-founder Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft Montreal, Quebec, and Toronto studio head Yannis Mallat and Quebec Premier Phillippe Couillard held a press conference. There, game giant Ubisoft unveiled their plans for the future.

The company will expand to Saguenay and projects around 1000 new jobs over the next decade. At the moment, they employ roughly around 3,600 employees across Montreal and Quebec City. This expansion will not only add a new headquarter, but also increase their workforce by about 27%. This represents “the most important growth plan” for Ubisoft in the province in the past 20 years.

The plan is to create 125 jobs in the new Saguenay HQ. 200 extra jobs will be created in the Quebec City studio, while another 675 will be in Montreal.

A Big Step!

Although the numbers don’t seem to be high, it remains an important expansion for the company. Creating jobs in Quebec has always been major and with the giant contributing to the cause, it will only ensure the province of Quebec’s position as one of the top hubs for the gaming industry. More and more indie developers are being created every year and more are being supported by the government thanks to specialized funds and other means of support.

This particular news focuses on Ubisoft, yes, but almost shows promise of growth for the entire scene in Quebec. It isn’t easy to cope with certain laws that can prevent acquisition or the developed of new technologies related to gaming, but with companies like Ubisoft expanding, there is hope for change.

I personally hope to hear about more companies either expanding or opening headquarters in the province. Really looking forward to what the future might hold.
