E3 2018: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Turning the Dial Back
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was announced earlier today by Ubisoft and it all takes place during the Peloponnesian War.
Before the Brotherhood
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set during the Peloponnesian War, which takes place roughly around 431 BC. You play as one of two champions. You are handed the spear of Leonidas, a mythical weapon that appears to have powers beyond one’s understanding.
That said, this iteration takes you back the furthest from any other Assassin’s Creed game has ever taken you. As a matter of a fact, Odyssey takes place even before Origins, before the founding of the Brotherhood.
Our adventure has always taken us to various locations across the globe, and to see Odyssey taking place where some of the most ruthless warriors History has ever seen is enchanting.
In many ways, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will offer a completely different experience from any other games from the series. For example, for the first time ever, you will be offered a choice as to which character you want to play as. Your choice will be final, so choose wisely between Alexios or Kassandra. During an interview with Kotaku, Odyssey creative director Jonathan Dumont stated that there are “two possible matches for DNA” that Layla (Assassin’s Creed Origins) is trying to experience. This explains the two choices.
As far as it goes in terms of gameplay variation, “the stories are similar”, claims Dumont. There will be a different flair from one to another, but no real impact to either the gameplay nor the storyline.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will offer more RPG elements to players via various ways. One of the major additions, set aside the fact that you can choose between a male or female character, you also will have the power to customize the allure. With the return of the loot system, players can customize up to five different pieces of gear. Just like many RPG, they will be classified by rarity. Also, each gear piece can be modified. Depending on the upgrade, you can give you armor extra damage output, more defensive stats, and more.
Gameplay, namely combat, will be completely new. Since there are no hidden blades and very little stealth from what we have seen so far, most of the fighting will be done the classic way. Your main weapons will be a spear, a sword and of course, bow and arrows.
Finally, access to a new and developed skill tree can be unlocked for a more personalized gameplay.
Mythology at its Core
In the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey reveal trailer, there are many hints indicating a Mythology influence. There are statues of Gods here and there, but also, near the end, what appears to be an encounter with the famous Minotaur. Does this imply that we will have to discover secrets of the Mythology? Are we going to be granted blessings from the Gods?
