Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire – Voice Over Announcement by Obsidian
Obsidian entertainment had some pretty exciting news to share today. By now, the studio behind the upcoming Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire has acquired a certain reputation when it comes to community involvement. The studio regularly rolls out videos for fans and backers of the games. But this update? Well, let’s just say it was a real surprise.
Obsidian’s commitment to fans
Beyond simply updating fans on what they can expect from the game, Obsidian has taken the habit of providing fans with design updates as well. This goes to the heart of the studios commitment to provide a transparent backer experience to those who choose to support them. Indeed, it’s a habit that is welcome during the last few years. Indeed, although early-access and “backer-driven” games provide studios with more creative freedom, they also make the consumer vulnerable.
That said, what was this announcement about? Well, earlier this week Obsidian announced a special collaboration with the voices at Critical Role’s Vox Machina. The now-famous cast would be available as voices for created player characters. Needless to say, that got people talking. How much of the game will feature voice-acting? What could fans reasonably expect?
To these questions, Obsidian announced that double the stretch-goal VO had been recorded. Today, they pushed that envelope even further. In a special twitter announcement, they confirmed that ALL of the lines of dialogue had been recorded. If you want to see audio director Justin Bell’s priceless face as he delivers that fact, here’s the full announcement.

With this last piece of information, it’s now clear that Pillars of Eternity II is going to be a real treat to play. Those who have yet to play the first game in the RPG series better brush up on the lore. After all, the studio is famous for its writing and player involvement within a grandiose storyline. Building their world on D&D foundations means rewarding interaction with the world and providing significant motives to NPC’s.
