Games Worth Skipping Xmas Dinner For

The Holidays have begun and it is the best time of the year to go out for supper with family.

I’m am writing this in the form of a blog to make it a lot easier to read and understand. Today’s date is the 20th of December, 2016. The holidays have begun and in a few days, most of North America will be on vacation until January 2nd, 2017.

As a gamer, I have a lot of trouble finding excuses to skip on family affairs; I sometimes want to remain in my bubble and play games. Just like thousands of people out there, the only time for taking a time out is now, and by gosh do you guys deserve it. Of course, if you are living with someone, you might not see eye to eye on this – you are promptly requested to attend a dinner party you have no will to be part of.

If you were creative, or convincing enough, you probably got a pass on one or a few family dinners. Now the question is, what are you going to play? Here are some of the best selection of games to play in the warmth of your home while others have to deal with yelling grandma and drunk uncle Tony.

World of Warcraft: Legion (PC)

World of Warcraft is one of those games with the tons of content. Regardless of the level of player you are, you will have enough stuff worth skipping dinner for. If you are new to the game, you can skip right ahead and boost your character to level 100. From that point on, you must quest to reach level 110, where the game really gets interesting. Questing alone can take quite some time, especially if you are new to the series. If you put in enough time and effort, you can easily reach it within a week or so.

On the other hand, if you were already playing the game and have decent gear, you can spend the evenings doing Mythic+ Dungeons and Emerald Nightmare in Heroic. Great enough skills and gear could grant you a chance at joining a guild that will attempt the Raid in Mythic difficulty. Regardless of the content you do, it will help you get geared enough for the next raid, The Nightwell.

Now let’s say you are already full geared and have completed practically everything Legion has to offer. What now? Well, you can always try to complete more and more achievements. Past dungeons can still be entered by anyone, so nothing stands in your way. Did I mention that you can still get some cool mounts that way?

Overwatch / Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Battlefield 1

I put those three games in the same category because they all share a relatively similar audience. They are all shooters and play with teams. Of course, they are different from one another, but all three offer cool multiplayer content. When online, you will be teamed up with your friends, or other players, so you can fully enjoy the shooting experience. All you need to do is find someone that is also staying at home.

The games listed above also have loads of collectible and level up perks. For example, Call of Duty grants you new weapons and attachments as you grow stronger. Overwatch, on the other hand, gives you a chance to unlock new skins and gain ranks. The higher you rank, the more likely you are to become pro. You never know, you might become the best player in your city!

Pokemon Sun and Moon

It is winter here and by Roger’s Rabbit it’s cold outside. Another good game, well couple of games, worth skipping dinner for are Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. Coincidentally, the game takes place in a new set of tropical Island called Alola. There, the sun is strong and the weather is perfect – everything you would want to have instead of winter.

Lose yourself in your bubble, under the warmth of your bed sheets and get ready to enjoy hours of Pokemon goodness. Pokemon Sun and Moon offer more than just a single campaign, you can train your creatures afterwards for competitive gameplay as well. If you want, you can also invite friends over for some friendly competition, trading opportunities and testing out combos. Why not simply complete the campaign together?

I personally enjoy the game for the collection side of it. There are tons of new Pokemon to catch and evolve, and I enjoy filling out the Pokedex as much as possible. If you share this interest, Pokemon Sun and Moon are definitely worth skipping family dinner for.

Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy games are long, challenging, and offer players numerous hidden tasks. Part of the fun to play the game lies in maxing out a character’s stats and in the story… well the story is always a pleasure (exception made for the Final Fantasy XIII series). As it turns out, Final Fantasy XV is an amazing game with a gameplay worth checking out. The story does have dull moments, but overall, the product is a work of genius.

Why is this game part of the selection? Well, set aside the fact that it is plain good, it has a feature that you might find interesting, especially considering the Holiday timing.

In the game, you can cook delicious meals that grant you various buffs. This is true in many games – even World of Warcraft offers that option. However, the difference lies in the visuals; Final Fantasy XV grants you the power to cook amazing Instagram-worth plates. You might not be able to eat them in real life, but if you are at home alone, nothing prevents you from using the recipe as inspiration for real life cooking.
