Far Cry 5: Once Upon A Time In Hope County
In celebration of the upcoming release of Far Cry 5, Ubisoft invited several members of the press for an exclusive panel and behind the scenes gameplay opportunity.
Set for release on March 27th, 2018, Far Cry 5 is the latest installment of the series. Unlike its predecessors, which take place in remote locations (secluded islands, mountains, etc.), Far Cry 5 is set in the heart of a fictional Montana. The state, known for its open skies and settlements was represented in the game as such.
However, the peace has been disturbed by a group of cultists called Eden’s Gate, lead by a preacher named Joseph Seed. The goal is simple, eliminate the threat and bring back this little town to its former glory. The premise is simple enough, but the methods you have access to tackle the issues are abundant.
During the exclusive Ubisoft event, Executive Producer & Creative Director Dan Hay, Associate Producer Philippe Fournier, and Narrative Director Jean-Sébastien Decant sat down for a conversation-type panel where various elements of the game were discussed.
Sharing more about Montana, Fournier, Hay and Decant explained why this location was chosen. “The idea during Far Cry 3 was to bring it closer to us. It was too early,” they explained. Following the release of Far Cry Primal and Far Cry Blood Dragon the “timing felt right”, they said. While searching around for a closer location, they stumbled on Montana.
Montana isn’t your typical little town. During their trip there, Hay and Fournier got to meet a lot of interesting characters and went through some crazy moments. They shared some of those moments with us, but at the end of the day, it was the perfect opportunity to grasp the lifestyle and the surroundings. In the game, when you cross a field of high grass, you will feel it as though you were there – and gameplay supports that to a certain extent.
Although Montana in the game is fictional, its design and, more importantly, its inhabitants, feel real. Far Cry 5 was inspired by many stories and just like a good story passing the test of time, Far Cry 5 will always offer you a unique experience.
Everything Has a Purpose!
Far Cry 5 offers something quite special compared to the other games from the series. In this title, everything has a purpose. Whether it’s the random abandoned vehicle, the loose cages, the weapon mount…everything is there for a reason.
The game offers a lot of content and most of those elements can be found to help you with your quest(s).
Not only do things like vehicles have a purpose, but recruits as well. In Far Cry 5, there is a mechanic called Guns for Hire. Basically, this entails that you can recruit allies during your gameplay that will provide you with additional help during missions. Members following you can have different expertise, such as being proficient with a sniper or even having the perfect nose for sniffing out enemies. Each hire has his specialty, therefore their own purpose in the game.
Not only will you feel that each follower has its own unique personality, but various other characters in the game will feel the same way. This is especially true when it comes to members of the Eden’s Gate. While they all share a similarity in the cult, each one has their own way of thinking, their own point of view and ways to achieve their goal.
“Always trust your dog”, Dan Hay
Far Cry 5 will offer a wide variety of content; there will be a lot of things to do and many places to explore. Unlike past titles, the focus isn’t necessarily on a single enemy or even the scenery, but on a cult. Cults tend to do their work in the shadows, but these guys are taking over the town, and possibly more. Stop them!
