What’s Your Hobby? Featuring Randy “ItsBirdy” Crisologo
As a gamer and video game journalist, it comes to no surprise that one my favorite things to do is – you guessed it – play video games. Whether it’s the latest titles or some old school Atari games, I am addicted to them. As much I love playing these many titles, I also take great pleasure in discovering new talent related to the industry I love. Recently, I’ve discovered a talented individual called Randy Crisologo, also known as itsBirdy on Instragram. What is so special about him? His drawings!
Randy Crisologo, self proclaimed Pokémon Master, doesn’t only possess an impressive Pokémon Card collection of the original 150, but he’s working on mastering many types of art at the same time. After following this artist for some time, all the while being impressed with his phenomenal work, I’ve decided to reach out to this Pokémon Master and ask him a few questions about his work and personal interests.
Slimzz: How long have you been drawing?
ItsBirdy: Ever since I was a child growing up in the Philippines, I had my father’s creative mindset and my older brother’s influence to get me into doodling. I’d like to say I’ve been drawing all my life, because it certainly feels like that.
Slimzz: A lot of your work is posted on Instagram (@itsBirdy), and we noticed many Pokemon drawings. What inspired you to draw them the way you do?
ItsBirdy: It was all due to artistic boredom. I was behind the counter at my day job, where I spent hours drawing when there was no work to do. I was always drawing myself as an anime character, and eventually started drawing a Pikachu with my hairstyle. Then one day, from looking at Pikachu kigurumis (Japanese onsies), I just got this idea of drawing my “Birdychu” in a onsie of his evolved form.
Slimzz: You often dress the Pokemon you draw with a hoodie of their final evolution. Is there a reason for that?
ItsBirdy: I don’t know what else would be fitting to let them wear, plus the cuteness factor of a Pokemon in it’s adolescence wearing a onsie inspired by it’s final evolution is just so… right.
Slimzz: Judging from your Instagram pictures, you still collect Pokemon cards. Which one is your favorite? Which one is your rarest?
ItsBirdy: That’s a tough question, I would like to just say the entire collection as a whole is my favorite, but if I had to choose, I really love the promotional card of Ancient Mew that was given to the movie goers during the first movie. My rarest card, I don’t even know if it should count, but it’s a larger than the regular card, and it’s a Pikachu trading card that was given out with a Nintendo Power back in the 90s. On the back of the large card it says Not for Game use. I had traded this card, lost it, and got it back after a year of losing it. It’s beat up but its still my fave.
Slimzz: What do you think about Pokemon X and Y games? What are you most excited about?
ItsBirdy: I’m excited about everything! Getting to relive my childhood days in a more modern fashion. I’ve been waiting for a 3D pokemon game (aside from the stadiums) since Blue and Red, and now that it’s here, I can barely contain my excitement. Now, I just need to find the time to play through it…
Slimzz: Which one of your pieces are you most proud of, and why?
ItsBirdy: One of my most valued pieces, and the piece I’ve taken the most time on painting, hour wise, is this 49”x49” acrylic painting of a green dragon in a forest. It took approximately 36 hours and sits right beside my computer desk. If your interested I have a speed video of it up on youtube!
Slimzz: Apart from drawing and producing music, what are your hobbies?
ItsBirdy: I have way too many. I’m an adventurous kid. I use to skateboard everyday of my life for 8 years, then just started slowly losing interest. I’m interested in editing videos, free running, shuffling, just really random things that I think would appeal to a particular congregate.
Slimzz: Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur?
ItsBirdy: Squirtle, Squirt!
Slimzz: In a Pokemon Fight, what would be your team composition?
ItsBirdy: Right now, my chosen team is Nidoking, Murkrow, Scizor, Glaceon, Blaziken, and ofcourse Pikachu!
Slimzz: Where did your alias “ItsBirdy” come from?
ItsBirdy: I woulda chosen NamesBirdy (named after my blogging youtube), but someone already jacked it, so I went even simpler.
Slimzz: Can we expect to see any big projects soon?
ItsBirdy: That’s a tough one to say, at the moment it feels I’m conflicted in exactly what it is that I do, because I do so much. So I’m thinking of changing my entire approach in my works, for now, take a break from painting and build on my ideas more than my skill..
Slimzz: Who is your favorite Pokemon?
ItsBirdy: I really like Scyther, and of course his evolution is just badass.
Slimzz: Do you have anything to say to your fans out there?
ItsBirdy: I can be all cheesy and say, “Without you guys, none of this would’ve been possible”. Or I could be an arrogant a**hole and say, “I think through hard work and perseverance anyone could achieve exposure like this”. Or I can just say “Thanks for all the admiration and the immense recognition, the feedback is what motivates me to keep moving forward.”
