E3 2018 Features

Square Enix – E3 2018 Recap

We came for Kingdom Hearts 3 and stayed for new IP.

In a show of force, Square Enix aimed to please the crowd at today’s E3 press conference. It was short, but it was sweet. Without wasting any time, let’s dive into IMGMR’s Square Enix Recap.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Release date: September 14, 2018

The first game presented had heavy Mayan symbolism. This built into additional information on the new Tomb Raider game published by Eidos Montreal. Crystal Dynamics evidently wants players to experience a fitting end to the Tomb Raider Trilogy.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider bases itself on brutal jungle environments, in an attempt to stop the end of the world. The villainous organization of Trinity is back, and once again, it outguns Lara.

The developers want you to become “one with the jungle”. This means using grappling hooks and arrows to lasso enemies up into the trees. Stealth seems essential to the gameplay, much more than in Lara’s last foray. For instance, players will be able to cover themselves in Mud to evade prying eyes. This is a welcome change in the series, and a logical next step for it.

New traversal techniques, 360-degree swimming. One of the biggest hubs in any Tomb Raider game. More tombs, more traps. It looks like the game will deliver on all these points.

Final Fantasy Online: Patch 4.3 – Under the Moonlight

Release date: Summer 2018

Well, it’s no expansion. But Square Enix did announce that there would be a rather meaty patch coming to Final Fantasy IVX.

New dungeons and enemies are the first things put on display in Square Enix’s trailer. Golems and automation seem like strong themes. You’d be forgiven if you were disappointed, but SE had something else in their sleaves. They also announced a Monster Hunter: World collaboration!

Little is known as of now, but the trailer does show a party facing off against a Rathalos in what appears to be an instance. A new raid perhaps? Time will tell!

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

Release Date: June 26th, 2018

DontNod’s latest entry into the Life is Strange universe was showcased once again. While we didn’t get to see the same trailer as yesterday, we did get some insight from the creative directors from the studio. They clarified that the full experience will be free on June 26th. It’s not Life is Strange 2, but its a way for the studio to demonstrate the expansive world they have in mind. They’ve even teased links to the second season in this game.

It seems like the studio wants to give itself some leeway when it comes to telling the stories linked to their world, so it’s nice to see them act on it.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Illusive Age

Release Date: September 4, 2018

Voice over is showcased, a staple of the North American release of the upcoming Dragon Quest game. Little information was provided, other than the protagonists class “Lumeneri”. What this entails is still unclear, but our hero has a very colourful cast of characters by his side.

The world looks expansive, the series continues to expand on the scale of boss encounters. The battle between light and dark is coming to the West, and it looks impressive. Fans should be pleased.

Sadly, no Switch release was announced. It may come later this summer, or not at all.

Babylon’s Fall

Release Date: TBA 2019

Just when Square Enix’s conference was hitting a slump, viewers were blessed with cryptic images. Historic events and new discoveries are put on display. From the trailer, it’s clear the studio is trying to show a progression in a detailed world.

Just who might this studio be? None other than PlatinumGames. We have very little information on this new IP as of now. Could it be possible that they’d take this opportunity to reuse Scalebound assets?

NIER: Automata – Become as gods edition

Release Date: June 26th, 2018

As was announced yesterday, NIER: Automata is coming to XBOX one X. No more information was given on the updates to the port, but you will be able to snag the base game with the available DLC.

If you haven’t played the great game by PlatinumGames, June 26 is your chance.

Octopath Traveler

Release Date: July 13, 2018

By now, fans are ready to explore the realm of Ostera. The unique art style of OT is put on display in the latest trailer, merging 3D with 2D RPG combat systems. The overworld and city we were teased only confirm the beauty of the undertaking.

Just Cause 4

Release Date: December 4, 2018

A blaring song and exploding jets is a classic demonstration of Just Cause’s aesthetic. A new trailer and additional information from the studio was provided via voice over at Square Enix’s conference.

Rico is still a rogue agent, but this time he’s taking on the fictional south-American nation of Solice. The studio promises, amongst others, a lot of variation in location. Oppression, fear and Violence are still at the heart of this new story. This time, they’re championed by a private militia named “The Black Hand”.

Destruction and physics are being upped with drastic weather events, sandstorms, blizzards, tornadoes. You witness the spectacular destruction.

The studio has also announced an overhaul of their vehicle. Beyond adding new mayhem through car transporters and wrecking balls, they’ve also announced new handling on bikes cars and micro-jets.

When it comes to combat, Rico’s grappling hook is fully customizable. Combat AI has been overhauled, through little details are known. AI is designed around archetypes which the studio hopes will keep players on their toes.

The Quiet Man

Release Date: TBA – More information in August

The Quiet Man is another new, cryptic IP from Square Enix. The game is teased via a live-action trailer of a young man confronting thugs in a back alley. It’s only when they try and question him that you realize the character is deaf.

The trailer switches seamlessly to the game engine, which looks action-packed. We still have very little information, but the studio has confirmed that more is coming in August.

I’ll hold my breath till then.

Kingdom Hearts 3

Release Date: January 29, 2019

The conference ended with the reason people were there in the first place. Kingdom Hearts 3 finally gets a release date.

Little new information has come out of the Square Enix conference, where we were treated to an altered trailer. Elsa and the world of Frozen make their way into the roster, confirming a long-held fan-theory. This comes with new Keyblade transformations with Elsa and an open world to sleigh around in.

Unique to this trailer, Ratatouille is now announced, as well as associated cooking mechanics (or a summon)?

We’re still missing information on two key points. (1) Roxas’ return. Data Roxas? And (2) Aqua after Birth by Sleep and 0.2. It may be that she’s been corrupted by the realm of darkness or possessed by Xehanort.

Time will tell, but fans have a reason to be hyped.

That’s all for our Square Enix 2018 Recap. Be sure to check back on IMGMR for more E3 2018 news!
