Here is an exclusive title coming to the PlayStation 4. Horizon: Zero Dawn is a brand new title that was revealed during Sony’s E3 press conference.
Fortunately, we had the chance of spending time with members of Guerilla Games, Lambert Wolterbeek Muller and Jan Bart Can Beek, to talk about their big game. Lambert is the producer of the game and Jan Bart is the director. They were very welcoming to give us some of their time to talk about what makes Horizon: Zero Dawn so amazing. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
The demo began in a moment where they needed to explore the environment in order to find resources on the robot dinosaurs. The first objective in making this game was to be able to demonstrate how the world would look like a thousand years into the future. Many studios in the past has stopped themselves to imagining worlds that are set 100 or 200 years into the future. Guerilla Games really wanted to push this idea to an extreme and you get a game set in a period that no one has thought of before. It is quite interesting what they made with it. Through our experience in this game, we will find out how and why has the world pushed mankind to return to the wild and the wild life has been replaced with a robotic one. So far, the game is expected to come in 2016.
Basically, the game is an open-world RPG. Everything we see can be reached and explored. This game is set in a mysterious world so it is only natural that players will feel the need to explore it and get to know it as much as possible. Every area will feature a different kind of environment and the game will feel a living world. To this end, there is going to be snow, forests, mountains, oceans and more. Now, let us talk about the characters we will come to know in the world of Horizon. The character you play as is from a clan and she must hunt these mechanical dinosaurs in order to scavenge for resources and create equipment for the clan to survive in this harsh land. Her name is Aloy and she is an archer. Her bow and arrow are all made of metal in order to do any kind of damage on the creatures. She can roll to evade attacks, run and hide bushes from surrounding machines. Aloy must use stealth to her advantage as well, especially when the robotic creatures with surveying lights are around. These dinosaurs function as scouts to survey the area from intruders so the game has multiple ways to be experienced. Some dinosaurs also have weaknesses such as green tubes on their back which will need precise aiming form the player. Multiple objectives and a change of pace every now and then will effectively allow players to feel like a new challenge is always headed this way.
A game as big as Horizon will most definitely feature both main quests as well as side quests to keep you busy all day and all night. You will be able to gain more experience points in order to upgrade Aloy to better fight the bigger and more powerful creatures later on. New moves and skills will be unlocked which will help players better survive. These abilities will become essential for later challenges in the game.
An important goal in this game is to be able collect as much resources as possible through the defeat of many of these mechanical dinosaurs. Scavenging is of the upmost importance. You can also random resource to pick up in the world. These could even be remnants from the past civilizations.
As you progress, so does the difficulty of the game. Dinosaurs will grow in size and with it, their level. So, as RPG games go, players need to sharpen their skills and their character to be up to the task. Also, it is important to note that surprisingly, Horizon has no currency to collect in-game. The human race has went back to its roots and has opted for a more natural way of economics. NPC characters can exchange items for something they want in return. This is why it is important to dig up resources. Aloy can craft items with them to use them as a currency.
For combat, our archer has the choice to use three different types of arrows. First, we have the incendiary arrows and they explode on impact. These are very damaging arrows. As great as these arrows are, they are difficult to make so do not expect to have a ton of them all the time. Next, there are the electric arrows. They can stun dinosaurs to stop them from moving. It will effectively create the opening you need to deal a great amount of damage. Of course, there is always the regular arrows made of metal. During the demo, we saw a giant metal reptile appear before us. To take him out, it will be necessary to use all three types of arrows. Using the regular metal arrows on its metal scales will not hurt it. You will have to dodge the creature’s attacks and find a way to stun it with a well-aimed electric arrows. Once stunned, a few explosive arrows will help destroy the reptile’s thick armor. From there, the metal arrows will become effective to hurt it. Finally, once weakened, Aloy has a special weapon that can incapacitate the enemy in the most wonderful way. After a hard battle, an impressive finisher feels great to see. Aloy can also focus her aim and slow down time in order for the player to make precise shots. During this focus, if the arrow is released at an opportune moment, the shot will deal even more damage.
As amazing as Aloy’s adventure seems to be, the members of Guerilla Games have confirmed that Horizon: Zero Dawn will have a cooperative multiplayer mode as well. Although this is the case, they are more focused in making the single player as amazing as possible. So far, we can tell you the game looks gorgeous, the gameplay is innovative and the crafting elements are a great touch to the world they have created. As you advance through the game, it will be very important to know how to take advantage of all of Aloy’s unique talents. The combat is also a mixture of stealth and hardcore combat. Also, I personally look forward to this title. It seems like Horizon has a vast world waiting to be discovered. We cannot wait until we are able to hear more about Horizon: Zero Dawn.
