Lately, Kojima Productions has been releasing HideoTube episodes, which are series of clips featuring interviews and cool content. In episode 4, Kojima-san talks about his pre-E3 struggle.
E3, as we know it, is a major event where tons of new announcements are made. It is unfortunate, but sometimes, some projects get leaked hours, if now days, before their scheduled reveal. In Kojima-san’s case, he talks about how difficult it was for him to rest; he was scared that Death Stranding would leak.
“So every single year, there are leaks before E3. No matter how careful we are, in this era, something always makes its way to internet,” said Hideo Kojima. “Up until this year, at least half of our stuff had been leaked. And this time around, it was supposed to be a surprise.”
“So we didn’t let more than 5 people at Sony know about it. We kept it extremely secret. We absolutely didn’t want this to be leaked.“
“As E3 was getting close, many other titles were getting leaked,” he adds. “And we were thinking, ‘How many could be left?’ We were nervous; could barely sleep.”
In order to prevent anyone from even thinking that a Kojima game was going to be announced, Kojima-san took the liberty of getting back stage as early as four hours before the press conference. “Even going to the bathroom, I had to use a separate restroom”. All of the steps he preemptively took were ensure that the reveal would be secret and would surprise everyone. Kojima has a flair for the theatrical!
Being restless and stressed before the big reveal is something, but what about the game itself? When it was announced, many were talking about it – it created quite a buzz online. However, earlier today, at the Develop Conference, Kojima-san stated that he thinks this game will be his best one yet.
“So far, when I’ve been making games, I’ve had to give up on something or at least compromise on something in order to get things done,” Kojima explained. “But this time, working with you [Mark Cerny] and you bringing the state of the art technologies, we will get around that [usual problem].”
“I’m very confident that we’re working towards something completely new and that no one has seen so far. This will be my best work so far, I’m very confident about that.“
We are all looking forward to hearing more about Death Stranding.
Make sure to keep an eye out for any updates!
