Sorry to keep you waiting for this one. Konami has brought Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain once again.
Big Boss returns in his latest and craziest adventure yet. Needless to say that this game will be pivotal for fans waiting to find out more about the Metal Gear Solid’s lore. However, it is sad to see that this game is more probably the last one made by industry legend, Hideo Kojima. Without further ado, let us talk about what is new about The Phantom Pain.
In the beginning of the live demo, we got to see how the game looks like before deploying into a mission. We see Snake in the chopper as well as one of the new characters introduced last year, the sniper named Quiet. In Phantom Pain, Snake can choose buddies to join him on a mission. There are a variety of buddies to select as we will come to know. They also grow and change appearance depending on how we develop our relationship with them.
As for cuztmization, the game is pretty generous. Players will be able to customize their weapons, helicopter, vehicle, buddies’ equipment as well the color of their base. You can also make a personalized emblem for your army. The gun customization is pretty thorough, mechanical as well as aesthetic.
Preparation is pretty important to any missions. So, in order to get ready, players can listen to a variety of cassette tapes that may hold some intel that may help them better prepare their loadout. Speaking of loadout, players need to choose their buddy, equipment and vehicle before deployment. The buddy list has a lot of interesting choices as seen in the demo. The ones we were able to see were D-Horse, great for traversing large areas, Quiet, a sniper to back you up, D-Walker, great for scanning areas and assist in combat and D-Dog, who is great for tracking and scouting. There is also a handful of vehicles to choose from off-road vehicles to tanks even. Tactical strategy is the name of the game and players will have many options to better plan and prepare for their mission. Finally, it is possible to change characters. Snake is not the only option as there are a handful amount of options to choose from.
Once everything is ready, you can choose a time of deployment. Some missions will be more approachable during the day or night. Once deployed, you commence moving towards your mission objective. Along the way, we were able to see the beautiful scenery. The desert mountains of Afghanistan looked amazing on-screen. The lighting was very realistic and a big upgrade to Ground Zeroes. The camera is also very dynamic to the movements of Snake. Meaning, the player can feel the intensity of the action.
In Phantom Pain, the game has a lot of tactical options to take advantage of. Snake can extract various on-site weapons such as anti-air mortars or gun turrets. Having them extracted could prove beneficial as enemies would not be able to use them later after Snake had made contact with the enemy. Taking away the enemies’ offensive options can make it easier for players to survive an unforeseeable situation during the mission.
It is also important to note that players will be able to switch out their buddies during a mission. There are a bunch of gadgets Snake has as his disposal as well. He can scan his enemies to keep track of their movements. Then, he should take them down and extract the bodies out of there to prevent someone else discovering it. Everything that happens during a mission is in real time. This includes changing buddies, checking your iDroid and the like. In this real time world, there is also real time weather changes. In the desert, we saw a sand storm brew in which made the mission a lot more difficult to continue. So, players can smoke their Phantom Cigar to pass the time.
All this and more, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is proving to be a big game to watch out for. It is releasing on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Steam on September 1st 2015. Do not forget we didn’t even hear more about Metal Gear Online. So stay tuned for more.
