Japan To End PlayStation 3 Production

The PlayStation 3 video game console holds a special place in the heart of many gamers; it was confirmed that production in Japan is scheduled to end soon.

Thanks to the translations provided by Gematsu, we learned that on the official Japanese PlayStation website, an update was posted stating that “Shipments are scheduled to end soon”, speaking of the production and shipment of the PlayStation 3 video game console. While this sad news entails that Japan will no longer produce and ship the famed console, it is unclear how this will affect worldwide sales on the short term.

The last time Sony released an update on sale reports regarding the PlayStation 3 console, numbers went as far as 84 million units. Unfortunately, both Sony and Microsoft have ceased sharing sales report for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 a while ago, so the exact numbers have yet to be determined.

It is important to mention that production to the Japanese market ceasing doesn’t necessarily mean that global production will take a hit any time soon. With nostalgia hitting gamers all across the world and retro games regaining popularity, it is possible the machine remains in low profile production for the next few years. Markets like Brazil also are a little late when it comes to gaming technology. For example, when the PS3 first hit North America in November 2006, it took four additional years for it to launch in Brazil. Those delays can still transpire today in Brazil and possibly other markets.

In the long run, the cease of production of the console can have one of two possible effects. In one hand, the PS3 can lose value due to the PS2 and original PlayStation gaining popularity, rarity and value. On the other hand, it is plausible that the value increases due to the machine’s rarity. Most likely, the games will become a little more expensive at first (by third party sellers), which will result in the console gaining value in return.

At the time being, we can’t say for sure how the market will react, but we will keep an eye out and analyze the situation as it takes place.
