Celebrate #Pokemon20 With The Montreal Pokémon League
On Pokémon day, there is a lot of cool activities. Head over to Toys R’ Us from some giveaways, or get your trained Pokémon for battle.
This upcoming Saturday, on February 27th, Pokémon fans across the planet will celebrate the franchises 20th anniversary. Of course, you can celebrate your own way by playing the game alone or, preferably, with friends. However, you can also check out what is going on in your city, there is bound to be some local events happening on that day. That being said, there are two major things to note for Montreal Pokémon trainers.
During the day, you can head over to Toys R’ Us across the city for some free merchandise and Pokémon goodies. However, plan your time well because starting 11am, the Montreal Pokémon League will be hosting their first of many sanctioned VGC Tournament. What better way to celebrate than to take your beloved creatures and battle against friends and fans for the title of being the best!
The rules are simple:
“The tournament will use a Swiss plus Single Elimination Format,” explains Anthony Barbieri, the event’s organizer. “This means that no participants are eliminated in the first few rounds. The number of rounds will be determined by how many players enter the tournament. If there are enough participants, top players will be entered into a Single Elimination bracket to determine the final results. The size of this bracket will be determined by how many players enter the tournament.”
“Each round of Swiss will be decided by best of 1. Each round of Single Elimination will be decided by best 2 out of 3 battles. If a participant wins the first two battles, a third battle will not be fought. The final round of the Single Elimination bracket will be decided by best 3 out of 5 battles. The match is over once a participant wins 3 battles. All battles will be Double Battles using 4 out of 6 Pokémon in your Battle Box, played in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.”
What can you win? If you rank in first place, you get your choice of either the Mew or Pikachu Pokémon 20th Anniversary plushies, as well as a $20 gift card redeemable through the Nintendo eShop. The 2nd place winner leaves with the remaining plushie while the third goes home with an awesome Mewtwo Amiibo.
“We will also be raffling off two $10 store credits to Three Kings Loot, our host for the day,” added the Montreal Pokémon League. “All tournament participants are eligible to win!“
