University of Toronto announced that now, students can apply for eSports scholarships and push their gaming career forward.
When the topic of gaming is discussed, it usually turns towards it being a hobby, or sometimes a waste of time. The fact remains that many talented players across the globe left everything behind to become a professional at their game. Some of them found teams and support, as well as scholarships and sponsors. Gaming has become a profession to them and many institutions have taken action – everyone wants a piece of the pie, everyone wants to be responsible for supporting top players.
Today, we’ve learned that Canada’s top-rated university, the University of Toronto, will take applications for eSports scholarships starting next year. The institution’s alumnus Victor Xin started the program. The goal: support students who wish to polish their skills in competitive gaming. US universities such as University of California, Irvine have been offering similar scholarships since 2016. The University of Toronto is the first institution in Canada to offer the program.
“There are trailblazers on campus who are rallying a different set of students to build campus organizations focused on an alternative way of learning to lead and succeed in life,” said Xin.
Xin is a former student that graduated back in 2008 in Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. Following his studies, he founded the University of Toronto eSports Club. For him, the main goal is to ensure students understand that drive and leadership through eSports doesn’t “fall through the cracks”.
