EA’s E3 2018 Press Conference In a Nutshell

All Things EA Play!

E3 2018 kicked off this Saturday with Electronic Arts’ Press Conference taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Some titles we expected, others were a surprise. Here is a recap of everything they showed (and they saved the best for last).

Battlefield V

To start off, a cinematic trailer for Battlefield V showed us snowy battlefields, action-packed sequences, sniper action and tanks.  Heavy artillery appeared to be movable around the map. As for single player, we will experience war and heroism through the eyes of the men and women who shaped the world and faced the brutality of war. Customization and immersion will be important.

They made a brief mention of Battlefield Royale. The focus will be on adding key mechanics from previous Battlefield games.

Then, they rolled some in-game footage that took us away from the traditional fields of war such as D-Day and into the snowy peaks and mountain landscapes. We will get an exclusive first look at the Nordlys War Story in the XBOX E3 briefing on Sunday.

Date: October 2018

Without much surprise, FIFA 19 was announced. A trailer was presented, focusing on the story of one young man, working his way to the top. Coinciding nicely with the World Cup Tournament starting in 5 days in Russia, the UEFA Champions League was implemented in the game with an authentic tournament mode.

With input from the community and detailed feedback sessions with FIFA pros, they raised the bar even higher this year.

Origin Access Premier

Andrew Wilson, EA CEO, took the stage to present Origin Access Premier. All new games like Madden NFL 19, FIFA 19, Battlefield V and Anthem will be available through the cloud streaming service upon subscription. Millions of users are already on it. While it will launch later in the summer, there is a free trial this weekend if you wish to try it out.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

Among the crowd was Vince Zampella from Respawn Entertainment who teased the next Star Wars game. Called “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order”, it will be set during the dark times. For all the hardcore fans out there, the timeframe will be between the 3rd and 4th film. Zampella strongly hinted that we would play as a Jedi.  However, we must be patient as the release is set for the Holidays of 2019.

Date: Holiday 2019

Star Wars Battlefront II

EA took the time to make a much-needed apology for Star Wars Battlefront II, launched last November.

As a way to redeem themselves, they overhauled the progression system and added new characters to collect. There will be a new hunt mode and a new S.W.A.T. system, allowing to team up and play with friends. A new multiplayer sandbox will have players capturing command posts and taking over battleships. Then, knowing that it is a fan favourite, they will bring heroes, villains and planets from the Clone Wars. Taking place on the planet Geonosis, beloved characters such as General Grievous, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker will be added.

Unravel Two

The trailer featured a tiny red creature made of yarn, holding on for dear life in a stormy sea, the powerful beam of a lighthouse showing the way. With yarn as a symbol for love and the bond between two people, the tone was set. When the night is dark, it is time to form a new bond.

And Unravel Two does just that. Although the game can be played alone, you will be able to play in co-op with a friend, working together through the adventure. Teamwork looks like a dominant part of the gameplay. Here, the demo showed some nice level design, beautiful colors and cute characters. Featuring a dark turkey chasing them, the red and blue yarn friends had to swing from branch to branch with their yarn, reminding us a little of Donkey Kong Country.

Playing as a side-scrolling platformer, the tiny yarn friends must follow the spark of light ahead, solving puzzles and splitting apart at times in order to progress.

The exciting news is that the game is out today!

Sea of Solitude

From Jo-Mei Games, Sea of Solitude (or SOS) promises to be an emotional journey. In an art style reminiscent of Firewatch and the color palette of Bioshock Infinite, this game explores the theme of loneliness, a universal emotion.

That is what being a human is all about.

As for the setting, water is filling the streets of an abandoned city. A young woman, Kay, has been feeling such a strong loneliness, overwhelmed with anger, worthlessness and hopelessness that she has turned into a dark monster. Sometimes a red-eyed bird, sometimes a sea serpent, she lurks around the city in despair. The objective of the game will be to find out how she transformed into a beast in the first place and how to turn her back.

The main character will have to navigate through various waters; beautiful and calm or stormy and tumultuous. These weathers will embody different kinds of loneliness for the player to experience.

Date: Early 2019.

NBA Live 19

They showed the trailer for NBA Live 19, which had gameplay footage.

Madden NFL 19

They invited to the stage the EA Sports Madden Champion 18, Young Kiv. A video montage accompanied his testimony about how he climbed his way to becoming an eSports Champion.

Command & Conquer: Rivals

It was the world premiere for a new game for iOS and Android, Command & Conquer: Rivals. Centered on an economy system and micromanagement of resources, this mobile strategy war game was showcased by two players on-stage.

The goal of the game is to destroy the opponent’s base by firing two giant nuclear missiles on that enemy base. The game takes careful resource management, planning and strategy and control of the map’s three zones.

The pre-alpha version is already available for Android!

Play to Give

EA also mentioned its Play to Give program, aiming to be a force for social impact. Through 9 in-game challenges, they managed to raison 1 million dollars for three inclusion and diversity charities: HeForShe, PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and Ditch the Label.

At last, saving the best for last was the show’s main highlight. First off, they showed us some game engine footage of the much-anticipated Anthem. The trailer added some context to the lore. The world is dark and overrun with machines and monsters. Humans must protect themselves from the hostile outside world.

The anthem is all that remains.

Bioware’s General Manager, Executive Producer and Lead Writer were then invited on-stage for an interview. They discussed with emphasis how dynamic the world will be. Every player will experience the same weather, time of day and season at the same time.

When a mission is finished, the player will come back to base to receive rewards, talk with key characters and experience their in-game choices. The developers really want us to experience the agency of a single-player campaign combined with the fun and cohesion of a multiplayer game. Playing with others will be a choice, although it may prove more challenging at times.

On the narrative, the lead writer explained how they built the game to add more story for years to come.

Then, they delved into the mechanics of the intriguing exosuits called javelins that the freelancers must wear outside. There are 4 types of javelins. The Ranger will play close and personal. The Colossus will be a heavy armor carrying big devastating weapons. There are also the Interceptor and the Storm, but they did not expand on those. The focus was mainly on the Colossus javelin type.

The customization should be expansive, including paint job as well as the geometry of the suit. As for monetization, some cosmetic options will be available for purchase but there will be no loot boxes. They want the game to feel complete from the get-go.

Anthem will launch on February 22, 2019 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
